Chapter 3 | Old Stories, New Life
Hay Yei: Echoes of Malan Voices in the Ocean Night
Chu-Yin Culture and Arts Troupe

The performance takes place at night along the coast of Jialulan Tribe.
Sound becomes the primary guide. Voices, breath, and rhythm circulate through the space, forming a collective field of listening.
The audience moves within the performance rather than outside it. Songs do not present narrative directly but emerge as a shared presence in the dark.
What remains is a sense of circulation between people, sound, and place.
Chu-Yin Culture and Arts Troupe
Chu-Yin Culture and Arts Troupe was founded in 1997 in Taitung’s Malan community. The group is dedicated to the preservation and continuation of Malan Amis musical traditions, particularly polyphonic vocal forms.
Its practice spans education, cultural transmission, and performance, connecting traditional knowledge with contemporary presentation contexts.
